Introduction and Orientation

Overview

The lecture and discussion focus on students and the instructor introducing themselves and sharing what they want to get out of the course. The lecture provides a brief introduction to the study of the humanities and an overview of the syllabus that includes the course content, logistics, methods of instructions,  information about the course objectives, student learning outcomes, learning activities, assessments, grades,  reading materials, classroom etiquette, and performance expectations. The overview and introduction will provide the framework for the course, which will trace the history of human cultural patterns from the earliest periods of our origin in Africa through the complex societies in the Middle Age.  The lecture will conclude with an examination of topics critical to our sense of civilization, the concept of civilization itself, its historical roots, and its current prominence in geopolitical thinking and policymaking.
