Poetry Journal: "Wild Nights--Wild Nights"

INSTRUCTIONS

In your Poetry Reading Journal document, answer the following questions, giving examples/quotations from the poem to support or explain your answers.  Remember that when you quote from a poem, you give the line numbers in parenthesis.  If quoting two or more lines, use a slash to indicate a line break.  Example:  "And you laugh back nor can you ever see/The thousand little deaths my heart has died"(7-8).

Create a heading with the title of the poem.  Then answer the questions below.

  1. What is the subject of this poem?  What lines in the poem indicate this?
  2. What is the speaker's attitude toward the subject?  To determine this, begin by exploring the emotions you sense in this poem.
  3. Compare the tone of "Wild Nights" with the tone found in "A Certain Lady" by Dorothy Parker.Quote at least three lines from each of the poems and explain how they illustrate each poem's tone.  
  4. Thinking about your answer to question three, discuss what you notice about the ways poets use tone to communicate the theme (or larger message) of a poem.
