Portfolio Cheat Sheet

When you portfolio is reviewed by a prospective campus they will have very little time to go through it- 3-4 minutes so make it easy for them with the following tips

  • each page should have the same overall framework- so it's easy to know where to look
    • align work
    • set borders - the same for all sheets
    • be consistent with similar types of images
      • photos of models go here
      • drawings go here
      • research goes here
      • etc
  • keep page details simple- no decorations on pages
  • use only one font for the entire portfolio- you can change sizes and bold but be consistent about when you do this.
  • make sure the font is easy to read and contrasts its background so it can be read
  • scan or photograph individual images- do not use pictures of boards etc from class- only use the individual images.
  • photograph your work carefully
    • good lighting
    • neutral/black/white or grey background
    • cropped thoughtfully
  • use photoshop etc to improve drawings, images, enhance photos.
  • take out unflattering work- edit- not everything needs to be in your portfolio
  • redo projects that you can now see need improvement- or
  • highlight work that is well done
    • well crafted
    • details of work that you are particularly proud of.
