Prompt for Portfolio
At this point in the semester it is important to compile all of your work. You have until the very last day of the semester to turn in a compilation of your work.
What goes in a portfolio?
Ideally you have been photographing everything that you have made in this class this semester. That should all go into your portfolio
What format is right for this portfolio?
This is a digital portfolio that you will submit digitally, but I recommend setting it up so that it can be printed out. Eventually you will want to print it out and in that case you will want to print on heavy paper that can be used to print on both sides.
Depending on the format that you choose your portfolio could be 8"x8" or 81/2" x 11" or even 11" x 17". Any of those sizes or sizes in between will work. Set your page size in the software that you use to accommodate this.
This will be submitted as a single file - a compilation of pdf's or jpgs compiled into one file. Be sure to use a software that allows you to compile these pdfs or jpgs
What software makes sense to use?
You can use any of the following software to create your pages.
- Create your own Miro page to compile
- Photoshop
- Illustrator
- Powerpoint
- Microsoftword
- Google slides
- Indesign
- ?
This portfolio should show all of the work that you have done for this class this semester, no matter how short or long the project was.
Upload your completed portfolio here.
Minimal Guidelines (see below for more tips)
Please follow these guidelines:
- Look at the portfolio examples and guidelines posted on canvas
- Include all of your work from this semester- every project large and small
- organize so that all of your pages have a similar look
- keep text to a minimum
- use only one font through out.
- use high quality photos of each component of your project
- compile in a neat set of pdfs or jpgs- as one file
- do not submit separate files, compile all pages together to submit as one file
How to tips
The following tips are generalized for all portfolios for all work and all classes. This list will help in thinking about how to compile
When you portfolio is reviewed by a prospective campus they will have very little time to go through it- 3-4 minutes so make it easy for them with the following tips
- each page should have the same overall framework- so it's easy to know where to look
- align work
- set borders - the same for all sheets
- be consistent with similar types of images
- photos of models go here
- drawings go here
- research goes here
- etc
- keep page details simple- no decorations on pages
- use only one font for the entire portfolio- you can change sizes and bold but be consistent about when you do this.
- make sure the font is easy to read and contrasts its background so it can be read
- scan or photograph individual images- do not use pictures of boards etc from class- only use the individual images.
- photograph your work carefully
- good lighting
- neutral/black/white or grey background
- cropped thoughtfully
- use photoshop etc to improve drawings, images, enhance photos.
- take out unflattering work- edit- not everything needs to be in your portfolio
- redo projects that you can now see need improvement- or
- highlight work that is well done
- well crafted
- details of work that you are particularly proud of.
- limit pages to a maximum of 2 or 3 per project
- limit the number of design projects to 1 per page
- show auxiliary work such as photography, artwork, or other creative endeavors (these can be more then one to a page)
