Course Description: This course introduces principles and techniques of singing, musicianship and song repertoire.  Attendance at selected musical events at Pierce College or elsewhere is required. 

 

Course Goals and Objective:  This course is student centered, with active student participation in all sessions.  This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of basic vocal technique and performance skills. In a group setting students will learn the basics of sight singing and music reading, effective practice habits, how to identify vocal issues, and more. Students will sing frequently for the group and receive constructive feedback from the instructor and other students to facilitate growth.

Students are expected to:

  • Practice and attend regularly
  • Bring all handouts to class everyday
  • Complete assignments on time
  • Attend at least 2 live performances, Concert Reviews, information below.
  • Be attentive, respectful, and supportive of other class members

 

Grading:

        Students will be graded on class participation, with a focus on preparation and progress during the course of the semester.  Students will also be given written/performance exams on concepts learned during class lectures.  The Final Exam will be a performance.  Final grades will be calculated by taking into account performance in the following areas:

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

 

  • Demonstrate a beginning, practical knowledge of beginning vocal   technique
  • Describe and illustrate correct breathing methods to sustain vocal line
  • Employ beginning level practice techniques in preparation of a song(s)

  • Students will demonstrate their skills in performing in front of each other in class in a master class like setting. Assessed through individual or group demonstrations.

Repertoire:

Students will be assigned an English Art song, Italian Art song, and will choose a song of their choice to perform in class.  The instructor will also assign repertoire (solos, duets, ensembles, etc.) The assigned repertoire will be posted in Canvas.  All repertoire learned and performed in class must be memorized and is subject to be on the Final Exam Performance.  All students are requested and recommended to attend coaching sessions with the accompanist assigned to the class by signing up weekly on the calendar.  More information regarding this matter will be discussed the first week of class.

 

Concert Review Instructions:

You will need to attend two concerts (one being vocal and the other being instrumental).  The genre or style of music you choose is your choice.  The review needs to be typed, single spaced and handed in to me the last week of classes or on the final day.  Emailed copies will not be accepted.  You must attach a copy of your ticket or program to your concert review.  Some questions which might help you in writing your concert review are as follows:

  • Where, who, when was the concert?
  • What genre, style of music?
  • Research the performers and the music being performed.
  • What is the instrumentation? Write about the use of instruments.
  • Elaborate on dynamics, mood, expression, theme, etc.
  • Why did you choose to attend this concert?
  • Your opinions, critique and critical criticism is expected.
  • Compare and contrast other concerts you have attended.
  • Give historical facts about performers or a specific piece of music being performed.
  • Express your thoughts about performing and how music can be used in different ways.
  • Why did you attend this concert?
  • Did writing this review help you understand and appreciate the performance better and make it more meaningful for you?
