Assignment A06: Nighttime-Noise Directions

Introduction:

 For this assignment, we will be dealing with two concerns we experience as photographers, low light exposures and noise.  

 

Shooting Requirements:

2 Categories for shooting

• Long shutter speed at the Lowest ISO. 

• Faster shutter Speed at a High ISO.

Long Shutter Speed at the Lowest ISO

  Shoot in Manual.

  Use your lowest ISO available.

  Shoot with a shutter speed of 5 seconds or longer (Push the limits of your camera).

  Meter and use histogram to find proper f/stop. 

  Use a stabilizing device (tripod, books, etc.). 

  Photograph after dark. 

  Indoors/outdoors okay.

  Look for moving objects, interesting light, colors, paint with light, etc. (No car trails).

Faster shutter speed at a High ISO (Handheld at 1/60th of a second or faster)

  Everything in the frame should be sharp (no motion allowed!). 

  Use your camera’s FOUR fastest ISO speeds available (including expansion mode).

  Stabilization device acceptable, not required. 

  Indoors/outdoors okay.

  Photograph after the sun has dropped below the horizon or before it rises above the horizon in the morning.

  Subject matter should be something that interests you: landscapes, nighttime sporting event, live music, neon lights, etc.

  NO FLASH. 

Develop:

File Processing:

  Import images into Lightroom catalog, 

  IPTC, metadata, keywords etc. REQUIRED. 

  Develop Module, burn, and dodge as usual. 

  Use Noise Reduction sliders for Luminance and Color as discussed in class. 

  Sharpening.

 

To be turned in:

A zipped folder named A04_Lastname containing the following:

Exported DNGs:

• 2 images of long shutter speed at a low ISO.

• 2 images at a high ISO.

• 1 cropped Image of one of high ISO from above.
