  What is Distance Education?

The Distance Education (DE) Program provides comprehensive services that empower faculty and students with skills that are essential to success in online/hybrid courses. DE helps faculty utilize instructional technologies to enrich the learning process.

Distance education is not a new concept. With the introduction of computers, the Internet revolutionized the entire distance learning model. With the success of the Open University classroom idea, educational institutions interested in offering distance education programs started moving to online/hybrid learning.

Online courses at East Los Angeles College are delivered over the Internet using the Canvas learning management system (LMS). These types of courses are called fully online courses. Students sign on to Canvas where they "meet" their instructor, access the syllabus and other course materials, participate in discussions, collaborate with other students, take quizzes and exams, and turn in assignment. Not all, but some, online courses do require students to come to campus to take exams.

Courses which are held both on-campus and online simultaneously are called hybrid/blended courses. Students who take hybrid/blended courses will still go on campus to meet their instructor and classmates just like a regular on-campus class, but they will also do some of the course work online via the Canvas LMS. Some of the blended courses also link out to publishers CMS that allows instructor to enhance the learning experience.

Okay, back to our syllabus!

My Best Wishes for your Success !

Very well Dear Students; now that you have rolled your sleeves and ready to take-over this course let me give you some Encouragement and more information so that you would go through this course without any unexpected surprise.

Since we will cover one complete chapter each session, you need about two to three hours to study each chapter each week. Also, you need another two hours weekly to complete the homework. As you can see in the syllabus, we have three exams; therefore, you need about five to seven hours to do each exam.
Of course, the number of hours I have given you are estimates based upon the feedback I got from my students from the previous classes and should be adjusted by your personal speed of study.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is not a subject that I am interested to elaborate; I believe it is a subject which is beneath my students' character. Nevertheless, I need to briefly state that I strongly discouraged plagiarism and plagiarists will be reported to the college authorities. Please refer to Plagiarism Policy as stated in the 2021-2022 catalogue of East LA College and note the severe penalties plagiarists will face including being expelled from college.

INTRODUCTION

The nine colleges of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) intend to increase
the number of in-person classes, student services, business operations, office hours, building
access and other college activities at each campus for the Fall 2021 Semester. This advisory
will help provide guidance for faculty members to include in their class syllabi regarding the
wearing of facial coverings and guidance regarding student non-compliance in the classroom.

GENERAL SAFETY GUIDANCE & REMINDERS FOR EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS

LACCD falls under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health
(
LACDPH) regarding Health Orders, including masking/facial covering requirements. In
addition to the health orders, the County provides
Requirements and Best Practices for
Institutes of Higher Education

FACULTY MESSAGE GUIDANCE FOR CLASS SYLLABI

The following message concerning mask/facial covering wearing has been prepared for
placement on class syllabi for the Fall 2021 semester. Please display this message prominently
on your class syllabus:

Wearing Masks/Facial Covering on Campus

In compliance with Health Orders from the Los Angeles County Department of Public
Health, the Los Angeles Community College District,
Board Policy 2800, approved August
4, 2021
, all students, employees and visitors, regardless of vaccination status, shall wear
a mask or face covering while inside any District building, classroom, library, gymnasium,
facility or other indoor setting. These requirements are in place to fulfill the Board’s
statutory obligation to protect its students, faculty, employees and visitors from the risks
associated with the spread of infectious diseases, including the spread of the COVID-19
virus and its variants.

Students who fail to wear a mask/face covering while indoors at all LACCD colleges and
facilities, including classrooms, will be asked to either comply or to leave the classroom
immediately. Continued failure to comply constitutes a violation of the Student Code of
Conduct as outlined in
Board Policy 5500 and students may be subject to further
disciplinary action. Pursuant to Education Code Section 76032, students may be removed
from class for up to two (2) class sessions for refusing to wear the mask/face coverings
required by this Board Policy. Further or repeated offenses may result in discipline
pursuant to Education Code, Board Rules, and Board Policy.

Exceptions to the mask/facial covering requirement are that the student has a valid
medical exception currently on file in their college’s Disabled Student Programs and
Services / Office of Special Services (DSPS/OSS) office, such as a medical condition,
including mental health or disability, that prevents wearing a mask, or, for students who
are hearing impaired or communicating with a person who is hearing impaired, where the
ability to see the mouth is essential for communication. To facilitate sign language use in
the classroom, faculty and sign-language interpreters may remove their face covering for
instruction purposes only. In such cases, faculty and interpreters must maintain six feet of
distance from all others in the classroom. Should any student have an approved
exemption from wearing a mask/face covering, they must also maintain six feet of distance
from all others.

FACULTY GUIDANCE FOR MASK/FACIAL COVERING USE IN THE CLASSROOM

Although compliance with the mask requirement is expected to be the norm, if a student fails to
adhere to these requirements during class it is recommended that instructors take the following
progressive actions:

Direct the student to comply with the safety protocols, stating that non-compliance is a
violation of LACCD/College requirements and subject to student disciplinary action
under the Student Code of Conduct.

If the student complies, it is recommended that the faculty member send a follow-up
communication to the student thanking them for protocol adherence.

If the student refuses to comply, the faculty member should inform the student that:

They are being asked to leave the classroom immediately

Non-compliance is considered Willful Disobedience under the Student Code of Conduct
and,

Being asked by an instructor to leave the classroom can result in removal from one to
two class meetings under the Student Code of Conduct.

The instructor should immediately report students asked to leave the class to the college’s
Administrator on Duty, and/or the Office of the Vice President of Student Services in case
students are to be notified of possible further disciplinary action.

The college’s Administrator on Duty and/or the Vice President of Student Services should be
called for help in case a student fails to comply with the instructor’s request to leave the
classroom
