1.1 - DE Handbook Welcome

Overview and Orientation

Welcome to the LATTC College Distance Education (DE) Handbook!

This Canvas site provides LATTC faculty with essential information about the requirements, guidelines, and procedures for teaching online and hybrid classes at LATTC College. Browse through and find the information that is important to you, any time. Or you can regard this as a comprehensive read to help you understand requirements, recommendations, and processes for online instruction at LATTC. Faculty may consider time that they spend engaging with this resource as Flex-eligible.

What is required for LATTC faculty to be assigned to teach online?

The 2023-26 LACCD AFT Collective Bargaining Agreement Links to an external site. requires that faculty assigned to teach online:

  1. Complete a course in the Introduction to Teaching with Canvas (ITC) Links to an external site.
  2. Complete a course in the Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning (IOTL) Links to an external site.

While this Handbook will help faculty to understand the basis for the LATTC online class quality guidelines and thus assist faculty who are using online teaching modalities, it is not a substitute for the above required training, and should not be considered the sole preparation for newcomers to online teaching. The final module of this course reviews additional recommended resources for faculty to bear in mind when building online teaching skills.

Handbook Development

This handbook used the template from MiraCosta College. Leslee Koritzke, LATTC DE Coordinator, then edited it for information specific to LATTC and the LACCD. While this resource is designed for independent use, I'm always available for consultation and questions. I'm always eager to get your feedback on what you find helpful here, and what your suggestions are for improvement!
