Child Development 1

Course Description

Students are introduced to the theory of human development focusing on growth from conception through adolescence. The course content focuses on the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional domains, and ways in which biological and diverse environments influence growth.

Students identify typical and atypical development and apply strategies to promote healthy child development in their personal and professional lives.

Student Health Center: Medical and mental health services are available to all currently enrolled students at the Student Health Center. Student Learning Outcome

Identify, discuss and compare major physical, cognitive, social, emotional and language developmental milestones, theoretical frameworks and characteristics of typical and atypical development from conception through adolescence, by evaluating and applying developmental theory in observations, surveys and interviews to analyze, create and plan age-appropriate activities and environments. (Assessed through observation assignment and exam questions)

 

Technology Requirements

  • Reliable Internet access is required for this This course is designated as a completely online course.
  • Beginning the first week, the instructor will assume that students are well acquainted with the Canvas environment and have become proficient at the following:
    • Navigating through Canvas;
    • Emailing through edu;
    • Sending messages through Canvas;
    • Creating discussion postings;
    • Submitting assignments;
    • Browsing the Internet;
    • Creating and formatting documents in a standard word-processing application;
    • Saving documents in rtf or "rich text format" or as a “compatible” WORD document
    • Finding answers to technical questions through PierceOnline support or through Canvas tutorials available on

 

Within the first few days, all students should have resolved all technical issues with the PierceOnLine Help desk and be ready to fulfill the requirements of the course. No exceptions will be made. The inability to satisfy course expectations due to unresolved technical issues may lead to exclusion from the course.

  

Tips for Success

  1. Schedule your time to get your assignments done. Since we will not be having face to face meetings, you need to decide what is the best time for you to complete your readings, watch videos, and assignments.
  2. Always use Firefox or Chrome to access Canvas. Internet Explorer and other browsers often cause problems with discussions and

TEXTBOOK - IMPORTANT NOTE: To save students money, we are using an Open Educational Resource (OER), which is a free book. In the “Start Here” module, you will find a link to the book. It is in a Google doc format that appears within the module. This resource has chapter content that you should read along with reviewing all content in each module.

  1. Discussion Participation (7@ 10 points each) - You must answer all discussions.   1. Developmental Domain Observation (30 points “Babies”; 50 points Preschool Observation)- Just as children learn through observation, so do adults. Observation is an important part of the teaching/learning The infant observation is completed by viewing a film called “Babies” (the link will be provided in Module). The preschool observation will be completed by viewing videos (link provided in the module). Detailed instructions for the assignments can be found in the module

 

  1. Reflection and Feedback (3 @ 5 points each)-There will be a reflection and feedback to complete at the end of some modules.  These are for you to reflect on the modules thus far and let me know where you still have questions.

 

  1. Exams (Five exams at 20 points each) -There will be FOUR exams throughout the semester. They are not comprehensive and are based on content in the module and in the online book

 

  1. Reflection (10 points)-There will be an end of the class reflection. This can be about whatever you would like, your experience in the class, how online classes were for you, what you are doing to keep during this pandemic, or about something in this class that you found really interesting.

Some helpful hints with regards to taking an online class:

  1. Be respectful to your fellow classmates and instructor - be aware that what you write may be misconstrued, so think about it before you
  2. Everyone is entitled to their own ideas whether you agree or not; It is okay to disagree in a constructive way. Please be respectful at all
  3. Do not expect immediate responses to questions. Although this is an online class, fellow students and/or the instructor are not always online and available. I will respond within 24-48 hours during the week. Weekend questions may not get a response until Monday. Again, please check the Q & A to see if your question is listed.

  5. Please do not write in texting language. This will automatically drop your grade. Make sure to capitalize "i" and spell out all words.

 

NOTE: If PeopleSoft or Canvas are down campus wide (as confirmed by PierceOnline) during times when activities are due, the due dates will be adjusted.

 

Late Work : All work is expected to be turned in on the due date. No late assignments will be accepted. Be mindful that assignments lock out at 11 pm on the due date. You will be locked out at 11 pm even if you are in the process of submitting/typing. You must submit the completed assignment before 11 pm.

 

Dropping the class: It is your responsibility to drop the class; however, the instructor can drop you if you are not logging in and participating in class as expected.

You are expected to regularly log-in and to remain active in the course. Students who are not logging in regularly and who have not consistently submitted assignments will be considered inactive.
