2/15 to 2/21

NO Zoom Office hours - Monday, February 15 - HOLIDAY - PRESIDENT'S DAY

There will be Zoom office hours Wed, Feb. 17, 6pm. (an announcement will be sent out).

Congratulations! You are now ready for Week Two activities.

Please note: Each weekly Module runs from Monday to Sunday. Sometimes I give more time at the beginning for certain writing assignments. Otherwise, most work is due by Saturday or Sunday midnight of that week. Sometimes the following Monday.

                                                                                                                                                                      due date

Again, this is a fully online course. You are expected to move through the Module pages at your own pace on your own time. However, always be aware of Due Dates and Deadlines. No late work is accepted except for emergencies. Points are deducted. You want to avoid zeroes on your grade chart.

The work load will increase as the semester moves along. Expect to spend many hours reading, writing, and viewing videos. This class is not difficult for most students, however. I've done everything I can to make it easy to understand.  If your reading skills are challenged at this point in your English learning, then please think about giving yourself more time to read and understand by looking up words. I don't want you to rush through. Take your time to understand.

                                                                                                                                                            good things take time

Always ask me or our tutor, Azad, any questions as they come up. Stop by our Zoom sessions or email us with questions. Students usually do better on their assignments when they are clear about instructions. If we are not available, drop in online meeting with a CAS tutor.

By now some of you have received an email from me regarding the limited hours you are spending on Canvas. Get in the habit of logging on every day if possible and read assigned readings, listen to videos, and write assignments. You don't want to fall behind.

As you have seen from the Syllabus, reading and writing exercises are assigned each week from our Textbook Great Writing 5 and our Reader Hidden Figures.

In the first week, you were introduced to your instructor, your course embedded tutor, ESL 8 course policies and objectives in the syllabus, and Canvas support services. You participated in your first Discussion Forum, and finished a Quiz on Syllabus.

This week

You will start out writing your first Low-stakes Writing #1 Assignment on our Syllabus. Two paragraphs which are due Sat. Feb. 20.

The second assignment is Low-stakes Writing #2 Assignment which will be submitting a draft Outline and short five-paragraph essay on a topic by the instructor. (300-500 words). This assignment is connected to Great Writing 5 textbook, Chapter 2 on "Pre-writing."  But you do not need to have a textbook to write on the topic. Paper is due Sat. Feb. 27.

As I mentioned in Module One, I expect students in the ESL 8 Advanced Writing Class to be familiar with the five-paragraph essay format. However, in week three Module, a review of the five-paragraph essay will be highlighted.

This Second Week also introduces a new ESL WORKSHOP this semester to students through CAS.

A new icon is located on our Global Navigation bar on the left (grey area) called Student Support. Your instructor has included a page on what's contained in that link.
