Overview of Great Writing 5 textbook

GREAT WRITING 5 TEXTBOOK, 5TH EDITION

Let's begin the Second week getting acquainted with our Textbook and The Writing Process.

For those who don't have their textbooks yet, you can still complete the assignments in this Module without the book. I've given explanations of the assignment details that I hope are clear without the textbook.

It's always good practice in any class, to open your textbook to the Table of Contents and review what topics that textbook covers. Then check your instructor's Syllabus to see what chapters your particular class will be using. This is a good habit to get into for all your classes.

In Great Writing 5, examine the Table of Contents, pages iii to v. Notice the overview of what is covered in the book, Units 1-8.  For our class, we will be navigating through the following Units in this order: Units 2, 1, 4, 3, 5, 6, and 7. We will not be using Unit 8.

Notice at the end of the Table of Contents page (page  iv), there is a Writer's Handbook reference, to pages 194-221. You may want to review these pages for help with your writing. What is highlighted in this ending section is the Writing Process, Punctuation, Sentence Structure, Transitions, and Citing Sources. Of course, the links to CAS tutorial help found in Week One Module, will also guide you for assistance with grammar and writing. Go back to those at any time during the course for help.

                                                                                                                                             Transitions with sloth.png

Pay particular attention to pages 202-208. There is an excellent chart on using Transitions in your papers. Transitions move your material smoothly through each point guiding your reader from one idea to the next.

Browse through Units 2, 1, 4, 3, 5, 6 and 7 in your textbook. Get familiar with the headings and layout of material. Notice the Units are organized in the same manner.  The first page introduces the Unit Objectives. After that, each Unit has a writing lesson, readings, activities, and ends with Grammar and Vocabulary lessons. This will give you a sense of what will be covered this semester. Please note, in some cases, we will only use part of the Units. I will select specific lessons from each Unit and post them in appropriate Module each week.

Mark down any questions you may have about any section in the book. You can bring these up anytime during the Monday/Wednesday office hours on Zoom.  I'm here to answer your questions, so let me know if you have questions.

Now you are ready to start Unit 2 on page 26 of Great Writing 5.
