- Introduction containing a "hook",
- Thesis Statements,
- topic sentences,
- body paragraphs,
- Conclusions.
SAMPLE ESSAYS TO STUDY
Read the two sample essays on pages 6-7 "Against E Voting" and 17-18, "Study Skills" as good examples of the five-paragraph essay. Notice how they are organized with clear Introduction and Thesis Statement, three body paragraphs that begin with Topic Sentences, and a good Concluding paragraph.
Notice how the first line of each paragraph is indented five spaces. You will always indent your paragraphs in this class please.
Students who successfully transfer into English 101, must understand the basic organizational structure of the beginning five-paragraph essay. In English 101, you will be expected to understand these basics and then write much more. Are you ready to work hard at writing good essays in ESL 8 in preparation for English 101?
What that means is understanding the structure and then filling in each paragraph with lots of supporting details! Notice how many details are in each paragraph in these two essays. You are expected in this class to fill up your paragraphs with sentences full of details. Are you ready for that?
HIGHLIGHTED WORDS IN PARAGRAPHS - Each of the three essays in this Unit contain bold words. These words also appear in boxes "Words to Know," with definitions and parts of speech identified (noun, adjective, etc.) Review the three boxes of Vocabulary Words on pages 5, 13, and 17. You will be tested on them later.
GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY, SENTENCE STRUCTURE (pages 20-23)
