Pre-reading: How to Read Smart

As promised in my Introductory Module and Welcome Video, in this ESL 8 Advanced Writing class, students will be introduced to strategies to help improve their Reading skills. This Module contains valuable information on how to be an Active Reader.  The various strategies presented here will assist you not only in this class, but with your future academic curriculum and in personal readings.

Pierce ESL Instructor Jamie Ray has created an excellent video on how to begin reading a new book. Her approach centers on being an "active" reader. You will want to get engaged with the text even before you start with page one.

                          owl reading an open book

As she demonstrates, there are numerous activities you can begin to use which "engage" your brain.

As you begin (1) click on the CC at the bottom if you want Closed Caption where text will appear as you listen, and (2) these words are easier to read if you go to the right-hand corner and enlarge the screen to full screen.

                                                                                                                                 Pre-reading strategies sign

Enjoy this valuable instruction on reading smart. Have a notebook handy to write down some important points to remember. You can easily watch the video as many times as you wish to understand the importance of pre-reading strategies.

ASSIGNMENT: After listening to the video, take your Hidden Figures reader and preview the book. Look at the front and back, inside, check out Table of Contents, look at the Prologue for background.

Take out a notebook and make the following notes, as Professor Ray suggests:

1. Write down any predictions about anything you discover as you look through the novel's outside cover, Table of Contents, & Prologue.

2. Write down connections about anything you read on the covers, or in the Table of Contents, or Prologue that relates to your own life.

There will be a Discussion space later in this Module where you will share these pre-reading strategies and how well they worked.
