Vocabulary Journals-2
Starting a Vocabulary Journal of New Words
New words you encounter in Hidden Figures can be added to your Vocabulary Journal.
These could be common words, nouns, verbs, adjectives that you see, but rarely know the meaning. Or they could be words you haven't seen before and want to know more about. They don't have to be technical terms of aerospace or even military or scientific terms. They could be common nouns or new verbs you might want to practice with when writing.
Add words to your Journal that you may want to use in your future writings or speak some of these words in conversation.
What to Do:
- Write the word down, then put the definition of the word alongside or below the word.
- Write the word in a sentence (note if it's a verb, noun, etc.)
- Space out each word so your list is not too close together.
- Study them. Practice using them in conversation or writing.
Vocabulary Journals serve to increase your English vocabulary. You find you will start using them in conversation or in essay writing in school. You'll be amazed when you encounter the word again, you will begin to remember its pronunciation and meaning.
Words you look up not only help clarify meanings, but they can also be words you use in your English vocabulary, whether it be in conversation or writing.
At some future date, I will be asking you to share some of your favorite words in a Homework assignment, or you may have a Quiz on Vocabulary from the novel. Keep it simple. You don't have to list over 100 words for the semester. I will not be counting how many, but rather looking at some of the ones you were most interested in knowing.
Do this for yourself. It's a great way to expand your English vocabulary. Be patient with yourself. Don't expect to learn 10-20 new words a week. If you learn five new words in a few weeks, that's doing great.
