Welcome to Week Eight Module for our class.

Congratulations! You have finished writing the first of your four essays involving our reader, Hidden Figures. Now I hope you can see the rhythm of this class. The more papers you write, the better you get at writing. You will be able to use this style of well organized five-paragraph essays the rest of your college career in all of your classes.

You've learned the basics (brainstorm, outline, essay).  Now all you have to do is keep practicing this style of essay writing. In Week Ten you will begin to look at Paper #2 topic.

This module, you will continue with Hidden Figures, Chapters 10-13.

figures of three black women from Hidden Figures

You will also do the following:

  • read Hidden Figures (Chapters 10-13),
  • develop your academic vocabulary by turning in your first Vocabulary list from Chapters 1-9 of Hidden Figures
  • understand cultural and historical context related to the story,
  • apply another reading strategy to Hidden Figures (Annotating text),
  • demonstrate comprehension of events in chapters 10-13 through a Reading Comprehension Quiz.

reading comprehension showing two students reading

In Chapters 10-13 of Hidden Figures, you will be introduced to Mary Jackson, a 26 year old mathematician, and Katherine Goble Johnson. Here's a Preview of these two female mathematicians.
