Starting Week Eleven
4/19 TO 4/25 - Preview
This week, we will continue Unit 5 in our Great Writing 5 Text, Comparison Essays. This unit will center on the discussion of writing a Compare/Contrast essay, and that will be the topic of your next major essay for this class, Essay #2 where you compare/contrast yourself with one of the characters in the book, Hidden Figures.
You'll continue with Unit 5, pages 102-08. On those pages is an essay comparing/contrasting Online classes with Face-to-Face classes. I think you'll enjoy reading about the advantages and disadvantages of each in the essay on pages 103-05, since you now have experience with both types of classes.
The essay is a good example of Compare/Contrast essay.
Thesis Statements on page 107 will be examined, along with use of transitions on page 108 - focusing on compare/contrast.
You will be asked to (a) pick a character from Hidden Figures you want to write about, (b) brainstorm ways you compare or contrast your life with hers, and (c) start writing an Outline. You actually started to brainstorm last module when you wrote about two characters in Discussion space.
NOTE: I highly recommend attending Zoom office hours Monday and/or Wed. where I will demonstrate brainstorm and outline activities that will match your Essay #2, and to attend Azad's study session on Thursday where he will go over last-minute brainstorm/outline techniques also.
You will have two weeks to write Essay #2. First, you will brainstorm and write a draft outline this week and turn in paper at the end of next week, Module Twelve.
Next page asks you to examine pages 103-108 in GW5 text where you will see a Compare/Contrast essay as a good example.
