GW5 - Unit 6 - Reaction Essays
Reaction Essays - Unit 6 - Great Writing 5
What is a Reaction Essay? Your response to a reading, which includes your opinion about a subject.
Read pages 122-127 of Unit 6, GW5.
You do not have to complete any activities. Become familiar with what is meant by a Reaction essay. You will be writing Essay #3, due Thursday, May 20, which will be a Reaction essay.
When "prompt" is mentioned in GW5, that means the topic question respond to. A prompt is what I have been using this semester in posting your writing assignment. It's the actual question(s) or topic for you to answer and write about.
Notice on page 123, organization is discussed. Your organization is just like your previous essays - a simple five-paragraph essay with an Introduction, clear Thesis Statement, three body paragraphs detailing three points of your response/reaction, beginning with good Topic Sentences, and a Conclusion.
Outline - don't forget - starts with Brainstorm of ideas and then organizing your points in an Outline (body paragraphs only, points 1, 2, and 3).
Pages 124 and 125 at the bottom of the page in Figure 6.1, "Lost and Tossed" shows how much food is wasted from production to consumer. Read this chart.
Pages 126 and 127 contain an essay entitled, "The Shocking Truth about Food Waste." This is a reaction essay to the information in the 6.1 chart. Read this essay and notice how the student responded to the chart.
Notice the Thesis Statement at end of Introduction on page 126. The student took a position on food waste - found it "alarming."
Topic Sentences - notice how simple and to the point they are. Pay attention to the adjectives used in reaction to topic: distressing revelation," "another disturbing," "I was taken aback," (shocked).
Refer to this essay when you write your own Reaction essay, for its organization, clear Thesis, good use of topic sentences., use of reaction-type adjectives, and conclusion.
That's all you have to do.
Now let's look at your assignment.
