Course Description:

 

This course aims at providing students with a general overview of the history, principles, theories, and major areas of study and application in the broad field of psychology. Throughout the semester you will gain exposure to and appreciation of scientific theory and inquiry, behavioral sciences, biological perspectives in psychology, memory and consciousness, developmental, social and clinical psychology, personality theories, psychopathology, and psychotherapeutic practices. Psychology 001 is a lower-division undergraduate course that fulfills the General Education Section D and is a required course for all Psychology majors.

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course students will be able to evaluate behaviors and mental processes using basic psychological concepts and theory. More specifically, the successful student of the course will be able to:

  • Define and describe numerous psychological theories, theorists, principles and concepts
  • Describe psychology in terms of different and ever-changing cultural, religious, ethnic, and community contexts
  • Have an increased understanding and respect for how psychology works and benefits individual lives, communities, other sciences and disciplines, and the world around us all
  • Gain an enhanced self-awareness and an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of the world around us and the people in it
  • Think critically about what has been learned in the course and apply it to their own lives, communities and future plans
