The journey of achieving success begins with a single step: identifying your personal values. Your personal values are your core beliefs and guiding principles. They shape the roles you play in daily life. They color your interests and passions and frame your thoughts and words. In essence, your values are a compass that helps you make decisions and choices.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the impact of one’s Core Values in decision-making.
- Define core values and identify your own personal core values.
Your core values reflect what is important to you. They are a shorthand way of describing your motivations. Together with your beliefs, they are the causal factors that drive your decision-making. So, do you know what your top three core values are and how you prioritize them?
Identifying your own values helps you plan for:
- Your health and well-being
- Your academic goals
- Your career goals
- Your financial goals
- How you spend and manage your time
- How you spend and manage your money
Instructions
1. Review the values listed in the document: CORE VALUES - 2018.pdf Download CORE VALUES - 2018.pdf. Place a checkmark next to the 25 values that are important to you. Add any values that are important to you that are not listed. Take several minutes to narrow the values you checked and rank your top ten (10) values. Next, narrow the list to five important values, using the same process. Then narrow your list of five (5) to three (3) values that are most important to you.
2. Write a reflective essay (a minimum of 250 words, 12-points, typed, double spaced) that describes your top three (3) core values and what they mean to you. Do not overthink your definitions; simply write what the word means to you. There are no right or wrong definitions. Describe how you acquired your values; how you practice them; and how you promote them. What cultural experiences shaped and influenced those values? What impact do your values have in the social, education, workplace environments, and on your performance? What criteria and decision-making may be used to reshape our personal values?
3. Watch the video: What are Core Values?
4. Be prepared to share your core values during the class discussion.
