Communication Style Self-Assessment
Communication is the key to success in relationships, both personal and professional. In the workplace, how you communicate has a major impact on how others see you, how effectively you’re able to manage projects, and direct reports. By understanding your listening skills, you can communicate more effectively with those around you. Good listening skills are necessary for understanding lectures, taking meaningful notes, participating in discussions, and communicating well with others.

Instructions
1. Complete the Communication Style Self-Assessment 2018.pdf The assessment is composed of 80 statements that reflect personality attributes. Select from each pair of attributes the one which is most typical of your personality. No pair is an either-or answer and there is no wrong answer. Make your choice as spontaneously as possible and circle the items you have selected. Plan to spend 25-30 minutes completing the self-assessment.

3. After completing the self-assessment total your score. Circle the attributes you selected, and add up the totals for each style (One point per answer). The maximum is 20 points per style. Your total for the four styles should be 40 points. Add the total for each style.

5. Write a reflective essay (a minimum of 250 words, 12-point font, double spaced) about your communication style. Include in your essay response to the following questions: What did you learn about how you like to communicate? Is your communication style a product of your culture or something you developed based on the environment? What are some of the personal benefits that can be derived from knowing more about your communication style? Your essay is worth 25 points?
6. Nearly half of our communication time is listening, but few of us make any real effort to be better listeners. Effective listening is much more than just hearing; listening requires understanding information that is spoken.

7. Read the poem: “Could You Just Listen Links to an external site.?” Analyze the poem and write a reflective essay (a minimum of 250 words, 12-point font, double spaced) about your interpretation of the poem. 8. Be prepared to share your interpretative essays during the class discussion.
9. Upload both of your reflective essays in a word document via the Canvas portal by the due date/time.
