Math 258 (5 Units) – Geometry and Trigonometry– Spring 2021

Textbook: Trigonometry 10th edition by Ron Larson.

Calculator: Scientific calculator.

Course Objective:
This course is designed to meet the following objectives:

  • Convert between degrees and radians.
  • Solve right triangle problems.
  • Calculate arc length and area of a sector.
  • Analyze and graph trigonometric functions.       
  • Identify and prove trigonometric identities.
  • Graph inverse trigonometric functions.
  • Apply the law of sines and the law of cosines to the solution of any triangles.

Student Learning Outcome:

  • The student will solve a trigonometric equation.
  • The student will analyze and graph trigonometric functions.
  • The student will prove the trigonometric identities.

Attendance:  All students must attend Zoom meeting every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:50 pm. Any student with more than 3 absences may be dropped from the course. It is your responsibility to drop the course for any reason. There are extra 5% of the final grade for attendance.

Homework: : Homework should be submitted in time. The Instructor will check some indicated problems in homework. If a student missed those problems, the grade of the homework is zero. It is very important to dedicate at least 2 hours of doing homework problems for each hour of class in order to be successful in the course. You can enroll in MATH 100 or Marth 202 for zoom tutoring (more information in Announcements).

Tests: There are 6 Tests besides a cumulative Final Exam. There is NO make-up test! If you miss a test, and you have reasonable and documented excuses, your missing score will be replaced with the average of all the other tests.

Final Exam:
The Final Exam is mandatory and is scheduled to be taken on Tuesday, June 1, 7:30pm – 9:30pm.

Grading Policy: Student’s grade will be determined on a percentage base of Homework, Tests, and the Final Examination.

The final grades will be assigned by your final average:

90% - 100% = A                   80% - 89%   = B                   70% - 79%   = C

60% - 69%   = D                   Below 60%  = F

*All students MUST take the final exam or receive an F in the course.
