SYLLABUS OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this syllabus is to guide the student in the requirements, demands, logistics and expectations of this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is a survey of the visual arts of Western Europe from the Italian Renaissance through Contemporary Art. We will be focusing on understanding the culture and history of these periods through the study of art forms such as painting, sculpture, architecture, drawing, printmaking, and new media, as well as learning to see, understand and talk intelligently about art.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
SLO #1. Student will be able to deconstruct the impact of a work of art in terms of its appearance. (Formal Analysis)
Part A: Construction: As the “artist”, the student will create a “Culture Collage” as described in Canvas Assessments and make it available online. This becomes an artwork to be “deconstructed”.
Part B: Deconstruction Compare & Contrast: As the “critic/reviewer/collector”, the student will choose any Painting in our course to formally compare and contrast with the Culture Collage, describing the formal characteristics responsible for the impact of each.

SLO #2. Student will be able to relate a work of Western art from the Renaissance through contemporary periods in relation to the culture in which it was created.
Student will choose an artwork from the course and design five clues/questions based on the artworks’ relevance to its culture and its times. These clues will be posted in Discussion for responses and guesses by all. Points are awarded in relation to quality of the cultural clues and by the rational behind the responses to clues.
