This course is a historical study of the social and political development of The U.S. from pre-Columbian America to 1877.  The class is based on reading the required text, discussions, quizzes, tests and essays.

Student Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the course:

SLO 1:  Given a key economic, political, social, or cultural trend or event in the history of the United States to 1876, construct a well-organized argument, supported with relevant evidence, which evaluates the causes and/or implications of this trend or event.

Students will be able to explain and analyze the processes of historical change. Students will distinguish 

SLO 2:

Given primary and/or secondary sources relating to the history of the United States to 1876, analyze their meaning and usefulness as evidence.

Grading         Your grade is based upon quizzes, exams, discussion participation and writing assignments.  There are a total of 500 points to be given.  There one final exam.

Reading Quizzes 120 points
Discussion forums 100 points
Written Assignment 90 points
Film Assignment 90 points
Final Exam 100 points
Total Possible Points 500 Points

  • A    450-500 points or above
  • B    400-449 points
  • C    350-399 points
  • D    300-349 points
  • F    299 points or less

Behavior and Participation         

Regular and weekly classwork is a must if you are to learn and participate.  Because this class meets online lack of participation in discussions and lack of communication with the instructor will lower your grade.  Standards of online classroom behavior are spelled out in the class schedule, they are the rules of the classroom.

**Please be aware that this class covers human events that include violence, strong language and sexuality**

Extra Credit:  

You may write an additional film analysis essay.  See the instructions in the Assignments link.  The assignment is worth 20 points.

Quizzes and exam         

There will be six quizzes, each worth 20 points.   Please read through the Announcements for dates and chapters for the quizzes.

The Final Exam is based on the textbook, the Constitution, the Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin  and any material presented in class.  See the course for details. 

Discussions   

There will be discussions in which you will participate.  Students must participate on discussion boards.  Please read the Announcements for assignment due dates.

Homework  

Read each chapter in the text that corresponds to the date in the Announcements.  To understand the history and do well in the class you must read the assigned chapters.

What students can expect from the instructor

Students can expect the instructor to teach the course in accordance with the course catalog, the Student Learning  Outcomes and the standards of Los Angeles Community College.  Students can expect the instructor to treat them professionally and with respect.
