Course Description:
This course is designed for ESL students at the high beginning level of English acquisition and develops their basic competency in language and literacy. The course provides an integrated approach to listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar in building a foundational competency. Instruction modules focus on vocabulary, spelling, and life skills. Students are guided through word and sentence level pronunciation, intonation and stress, with specific focus on accent reduction.
Additional Course Goal:
Students will develop their English language skills to participate in class activities which will include both speaking and listening exercises.

Required Course Supplies:
- A notebook and pens/pencils for note taking, quizzes, etc.
- A flash drive to save files
Evaluation:
To receive a grade of “P” (Pass) a student must:
- Attend 60% of class time for the semester
- Pass all quizzes and tests with an average of 70% or higher
To receive a grade of “SP” (Satisfactory Progress) a student must:
- Have started the class late in the semester but maintained good attendance
- Pass all quizzes and tests with an average of 60% or higher
A grade of “NP” (No Pass) will be given to students who do not attend class for 60% of the semester and do not pass all quizzes and tests with an average of 60% or higher.
Make-up exams may only be given within a week of the test and at the professor’s discretion. There will be no make-ups for the final exam.
Please note: It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class if they stop attending. Failure to do so, may result in the student receiving a “NP” (No Pass) grade for the class on their permanent academic record.
Class rules:
- You are expected to check on your online class at least four days out of the week. Students who are absent for more than a week may be dropped from the course. Students who miss the first week of class each semester may be dropped.
- You are expected to participate in the daily lessons and activities which may also include group work.
- If scheduled, you are expected to complete two CASAS exams during the semester. This test is used to determine your English language skills improvement AND also provides funding from the state for your class materials, such as your textbooks.
- You are expected to be considerate and respectful of all your classmates and instructor in Zoom sessions and in online Canvas class postings.
- You are expected to use English in class.
- You are encouraged to ask questions in class! J

Academic Honesty Policy:
East Los Angeles has an Academic Honesty Policy, which can be found in the College catalog and on the College's website. All students are expected to do their own work. All forms of cheating and plagiarism are absolutely forbidden. Violation of the policy can result in suspension or expulsion from East Los Angeles College.

Make-Up Exams
