    CD 2 Principles and Practices
    Course Description
    This is a survey course of early childhood programs, current early childhood philosophies and developmentally appropriate practices. Early Childhood programs will be observed and examined in relation to theoretical child development principles, the needs of the child, arrangement of the environment and the role of the teacher. Professional development and career paths based upon CA Child Development Permit Matrix will be discussed.

    Student Learning Outcomes:
    Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
     Define the teacher’s role in facilitating children’s learning in the areas of physical, cognitive, emotional, language, creativity and social domains of development
     Apply developmentally appropriate principles to observe, analyze, and critique early childhood education environments and identify components of a quality learning environment

    Course Objectives:

    • Understand and differentiate between the various types of early childhood programs available to families and children
    • Identify different educational philosophies and understand how they influence teacher – child relationships and educational practice
    • Identify types of classroom curriculum and activities that promote learning
    • Understand the role of the ECE teacher and professional

    Course Modules

    This is an 16 week, fully on line course.

    Assignments
    Assignments have due dates and are due by that date. Late work can only be accepted if arrangements are made in advance and will receive a reduction in point value. There will be no make-ups for exams.

    Exam Policy: Four exams will be given during the course. Exam questions will be true/false, matching, short answer, listing and short essay.

    Grading Policy: Each assignment has a point value and the final grade is earned on total points accumulated. .

    Discussions=  75 points

    Final Exam= 0 points 

    Extra Credit - possible 10 points for attendance at a Professional Development Event

    B  = 240+
    C  =210+

    D = 180+      F = 179 and below

    Format For Written Assignments
    The following criteria apply to all submitted work in this course.
     All papers for this class will be typed.
     Student attaches grading sheet when turning in the project
     12 point font (not Courier New) with 1” margins on all sides
     Double spaced
     Grammar, spelling, punctuation count
     Clear organization: opening, body, conclusion
     APA format is suggested
