Course Description: Principles of Marketing (MKT 021)

This course introduces students to various activities in the field of marketing. It provides a broad understanding of the principles involved in the distribution of commodities from the producer to the user or consumer. It covers the consumer market, consumerism, packaging and brands, pricing, wholesaling, retailing, sales promotion, personal selling, and international marketing.

 

Goals and Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s)

Goal 1:  To develop critical thinking skills.
                             Student Outcomes: The student will be able to:

  1. Analyze problems by differentiating fact from opinions.
  2. Reflect upon tangible or intangible items to form a solid judgment.
  3. Use sound reasoning to specify multiple solutions and their consequences.

 

Goal 2:  To improve communication skills:

              Student Outcomes: The student will be able to:

  1. Effectively communicate thought in a clear, well-organized manner.
  2. Express ideas and connect with individual(s) or a group being addressed.
  3. Exchange ideas with others, understand other perspectives, and solve problems.

Required Texts:  Free OER Textbook – There is no physical textbook needed for this class. All the chapters are already broken down into modules, section by section. Read the modules, take notes and complete the assignments. Feel free to email me if you have questions regarding the free OER textbook.

 

Course Objectives

  1. Qualitative Analysis: Students must learn to analyze problems by differentiating fact from opinions, using evidence, and sound reasoning to specify multiple solutions and their consequences. Also, we will learn how marketers interpret the subtle nuances in market trends to develop marketing strategies delivering superior financial performance. As a follow up to our discussion on ethics, the class will examine how the presentation of “facts” should be based on sound, unbiased reasoning.

 

  1. Quantitative Reasoning: Students should be able to identify, analyze, and solve problems that are quantitative in nature. Sound quantitative skills are an essential component of career and/or entrepreneurial success as it relates to marketing.

Attendance

This online course is a 16 week course and is a synchronous class, meaning there are set class meeting times. You log on and complete the assignments at your own pace. I will be here to answer questions, give assignments and assist as much as I can. There will be no exceptions for late submissions, unless there are admissions issues. Students may be dropped for failing to complete work or logging into class.

Student Conduct:

your own words. Using words, ideas, computer code, or any work by someone else without giving proper credit is plagiarism. Any time you use information from a source, you must cite it.

The WLAC Library provides instruction on how to use the online catalog, periodical and research databases. In addition to a large collection of books, periodicals and videos the WLAC Library has course textbooks which students may use while in the Library. Web access is available in LIRL as well as meeting rooms. The upper floors provide a beautiful view ideal for study (WLAC College Catalog).

Learning Resource Center

All students are referred to and strongly encouraged to utilize FREE small group and individual tutoring available in our Learning Resource Center, 1st floor of the HLRC building. The LRC is transforming and expanding its services to include dedicated study group sessions with a tutor for specific courses at specific days and times (before or after class).
