                                                     Course Syllabus

 

Course Description:

Child Development 11 surveys major educational issues, legislation and trends affecting the family and the community. The course examines the sociological, cultural, and economic influences on various patterns of family life. The course also identifies community resources for education and public welfare.

Student Learning Outcome:

To Identify and evaluate the role of resources in the community that support children and families.

Course Objective:

Explore patterns of family life in our society, the roles of family members, and present influences of the environment on the development of a child. Become acquainted with community agencies which meet the needs of today’s society, understand inter-relationships among family members and between the family unit, the school and other various community members.

Course Requirements:

  1. Weekly Discussions                                    40 points
  2. Final        chapters   1-9              100 points
  3. Article Critique:                60 points

Read the article provided by your professor intended for teaching. Write a summary of your understanding of the philosophy presented in the article, and how affective you think it might be. You will be responsible for a written presentation of your findings. Remember to critique the article, meaning you might agree or disagree with what the author has to say about teaching & learning and ways to work with children.

  4.  Community Resource Project:         100 points

Details about the requirements of this project will be provided in the assignment section. 

 

  1. ACE's Project :         50 points This project will focus on trauma informed care. Research ACE's and write a 2 page paper on what it is and why all teachers need to know about this topic.   https://www.acesaware.org/ace-fundamentals/principles-of-trauma-informed-care/   
  2. Participation: In attendance and about you activity, class discussions and group involvement. 50 points

     Grade Scale:

350-400=A

300-349=B

250-299=C

200-249=D

       199=F

 

*Throughout the semester you will be presented with some extra credit opportunities.

*Cheating policy: Cheating constitutes academic dishonesty and in general will be handled as part of the course grading process. Penalty may range from no credit for

the assignment up to and including exclusion and/or an “ F” for the course.      

Assignments are due as specified on the syllabus or by the instructor.  Late work can only be accepted if arrangements are made in advance and will receive a reduction in point value.  There will be no make-ups for exams.
