Course Syllabus

Below, you will find a digital copy of the syllabus, which you are free to download and print for yourselves. The online course orientation video will follow shortly and I will embed the content here as well. In the meantime, do read through the syllabus carefully. Although it is lengthy, many of your questions can be addressed via its content.

Do not be alarmed, as my syllabus reads very cut and dry. This is due to my prior roles in the 4-year college circuit as a graduate professor; however, I'm probably one of the most down to earth professors that you'll ever meet. :-)

Women's Health is actually my favorite course to teach at Pierce and one that I think all students should take. There are some challenging areas of this course, but I know with some hard work and time management, you'll be able to do well if you put in the effort. I wish all of you a wonderful semester, as we start off this unprecedented year online.

Kind Regards,
Dr. Prieur

Late Work/Incompletes

Late work is not accepted. Course incompletes (I), at the sole discretion of the instructor, will be provided in extreme cases and/or imminent withdrawal. Loss of Internet connectivity due to external factors besides 1) extreme weather causing outtages or 2) Canvas not functioning, will not be permitted as a valid excuses for work to not be turned in on time.

Students are expected to have all course materials on the first day of class and at the time the class begins as well as during each class meeting/work session. Failure to secure course materials by the start of the term and/or neglecting to bring required materials will not warrant either an extension or an exemption from coursework. The late policy will remain in full effect. Please plan accordingly.

Life does happen and unavoidable, extenuating circumstances do arise. In these cases only will I consult with the individual to determine an appropriate course of action for assignment completion. This is not the same as improper planning or poor time management. Ensure that family, work, and life obligations do not interfere with your ability to submit work on time.

Pre-requisites

To access work in this course, there are two required pre-requisites: a syllabus quiz and a computer system pre-check to ensure system compatibility for exams. You will not be able to access work without completing these two modules. Failure to perform the required pre-requisites will not grant an extension or exemption for coursework.

Assignment Submissions

**Do not submit assignments more than one time. Only single submissions are accepted and if multiple submissions are present, I will only view and grade the latest submission in the portal.**

**To prevent the risk of malware, viruses, and to ease grading time-frames, I do not download assignments to either my work or home computers. All submissions must be fully visible/playable/readable in the Canvas portal and/or via public links. As such, I restrict file types for assignment submissions.**

1.) When submitting assignments, quizzes, labs, discussion boards, or other course work, be sure to follow instructions carefully. Assignments that are not submitted properly, including sloppy or unedited work, will not be accepted and reported in the grade-book with a score of "0." At the sole discretion of the instructor, a re-submit may be permitted; however, a 20% late penalty will automatically be assessed. This statement does not apply for work that is sent to my inbox/email.

2.) I do not accept assignments via email for any reason whatsoever and will not recognize or acknowledge work submitted in this fashion. It is your responsibility to ensure that work is submitted on time. Waiting until the last minute is a surefire way to miss a deadline, as you cannot account for internet speed, uploading times, etc. I often have people who do this and then send me emails with attachments to their work at 12:05am because they missed the 11:59pm cutoff.

3.) Any video/audio submissions must show your entire face, uncovered, from the front. If I cannot verify that it is you in the video/audio, credit cannot be given for the work.

4.) Audio/video submissions must use a third-party platform and include a public access link for me to view and grade. You may copy and paste multiple links into the submission portal box. Please ensure that they are "click and play" by enabling them to be active hyperlinks. You will know the link is an active hyperlink when it turns blue and you can click directly on it to access the video. Verify your links work prior to submission.

Links must play directly in the web browser and not require downloading to a computer. If link require a download, are not public, or expire and I am unable to view the submission, no points will be allotted for the assignment. No attachments in the Canvas portal for videos/audios are permitted. Acceptable 3rd-party uploading and viewing platforms include the following:

  • Yuja
  • Youtube

5.) For written work, a single upload  (attachment) is permitted. If video links accompany your assignment or written work, please embed the hyperlinks directly into the document. Ensure the links are active "click and play" hyperlinks that can be directly accessed without needing to be copied and pasted into a web browser. Acceptable file types include the following:

  • doc
  • docx
  • pdf

Any work that I cannot open will receive a score of "0." Please do not expect the instructor to find a compatible program to download and convert your submission.

Attendance & Tardy Policy

Attendance is mandatory. Absences will be counted via weekly portal check-ins via Canvas (you simply need to log in to show attendance). Students who do not log into the portal for 5 separate days, not including weekends and holidays (whether consecutive or spread out) will be dropped from the course. Late arrivals or leaving prior to the conclusion of the course will result in a 20% (3 point/day) deduction for missed activity time. If you are more than 15 minutes late or leave 15 minutes early to any scheduled course meeting or lab, or miss in any combination a total of 15 minutes from class, including disappearing & returning (i.e. bathroom or water breaks), you will be marked as absent and will not be allowed to participate or receive credit for the day.

Professionalism

Students are expected to conduct themselves in a scholarly manner, to include classroom discussions, peer correspondence, emails, etc. Internet/text shorthand and colloquial communication is not suitable for the academic environment and will not be tolerated. Proper English and grammar are required.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Racial/gender/sexual epithets, disrespectful, aggressive, or threatening behavior, etc. will not be tolerated.

Electronic Communication:

  1. Please use appropriate and professional tone while sending e-mail or other electronic correspondence. Emails that are not sent with an appropriate diction will be deleted without response. Emails must be written tactfully and professionally, not using casual, everyday jargon. Please respect the academic environment. For each initial correspondence, a greeting, body, and salutation should be used, such as similar to writing a letter. The email nature does not depreciate your requirement to be respectful, professional, and scholarly at all times.
  2. When sending correspondence, you must include your full name, the class, and the course/section to which you are referring. Emails that do not contain this information will not be entertained.

Verbal Communication:

  1. The use of vulgarity, racial epithets, and otherwise derogatory language will not be permitted or tolerated in any fashion.
  2. Please remember to address all faculty and staff appropriately (i.e. no first names)
  3. Please communicate with peers/classmates in a scholarly manner at all times.

Academic Integrity

All students are expected to complete original work and cite all sources and quotes. No more than 10% of work may be quoted/used to supplement work. Cheating, plagiarism, lying, or dishonesty will be met with the strictest penalties allowed under LACCD and Pierce College guidelines. No credit will be given for assignments in which misconduct arose, including the “sharing” of work. All assignments must be completed individually.

  8. I do not work on Saturday or Sunday. Thank you for understanding and respecting this.
