Course Description: This course promotes healthy physical and psychological lifestyles, with emphasis on disease prevention, nutrition, sexuality, reproduction, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, aging, stress management, and weight control. This course will be taught 100% online for fall 2021 instead of the usual hybrid form (partially face-to-face and partially online). Please be aware there is a time factor for online assignments/discussions/quizzes. Therefore it is recommended the student uses the calendar at the end of the syllabus or the outline of upcoming assignments duelist on the right to stay current on course work. For success in the course, it is recommended the student has a computer and internet access. This course also has a fitness lab component. The fitness component may consist of fitness assessments, light cardiovascular and strength exercises, flexibility work, and mediation. The fitness work will be conducted via online videos or recorded videos with the instructor.
Course Student Learning Outcomes:
-
The students will be able to identify holistic health principles, apply exercise science to fitness evaluations, and analyze the risk factors associated with chronic disease.
Student Materials: Textbook – Fitness and Wellness, 14th Ed., Hoeger, Werner, and Hoeger, Sharon. ISBN-13:978-0-357-36781-0. The book can be purchased online through the publisher, Cengage-MindTap, and accessed in the book module.

Course Participation Policy:
Please complete all assignments by the assigned due date. Underneath the syllabus is a 'Course Summary' which lists all work by due dates/time. Please be sure to abide by the scheduled timelines. This course has a fitness lab portion. There will be fitness, yoga, and meditation videos the student will participate in, film, and upload for lab credit.
Tools for the course (required):
The student will need a computer with a camera and stable internet access. This is necessary to film, upload videos for the class and participate in class discussions, submit tests and homework. Reliable internet access is required for this course. This course is designated as a fully online course that utilizes multiple areas of asynchronous online environments including the Canvas LMS and the Pierce Library.
Beginning the first week of the term, the instructor will assume that students are well acquainted with the Canvas environment and have become proficient at the following:
o Navigating through Canvas, emailing through LACCD.edu, sending messages through Canvas, attaching documents, replying to discussion postings, submitting assignments to the assignments section
By the end of the first week of the term, all students should have resolved all technical issues with support from the Pierce OnLine Helpdesk at the Pierce help desk and be ready to fulfill the requirements of the course. No exceptions will be made; no excuses will be accepted. If you are struggling to log into the class, please let me know ASAP so we can resolve this before the first assignment is due.
Student Performance and Evaluation:
-
Weekly chapter quizzes and discussions: open online Mondays at 12 am and close Saturdays at 11 pm. Each week there will be a chapter quiz, 10 questions, with two attempts. The quizzes and discussions will not be reopened if missed and a zero will be earned. Late work (except exams) is accepted 24 hours after the due date, Sunday at 11 pm, minus 20% off the grade earned.
-
Labs: Labs are the fitness component of the course. They are due bi-weekly. Lab questions will be submitted with a write-up and video submissions.
-
Documentaries/Videos: External links to Ted Talks and YouTube will be provided as additional content to supplement the course. Online discussions and/or written submissions will accompany the videos.
-
Exams: Exams will mostly involve objective items (multiple-choice, true-false, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and matching type questions). There will be two attempts only for each chapter quiz with the highest score will be kept. All weekly quizzes close Saturdays at 11 pm.
-
The final exam will be given during the final exam week, Tuesday, May 31st to Monday, June 6th. The exam will consist of chapters 1 - 9 slides, article readings, and supplemental videos. If the exam is missed, a zero will be earned. No make-ups and only one attempt.
-
Non-participation for long-term injury or illness: Students who become injured or seriously ill and are physically unable to participate in class activity for an extended period of time are required to provide the instructor with medical documentation from a physician immediately after a diagnosis has been made. Based on the timing of the student’s recovery, the instructor will determine in consultation with the student, if s/he is able to fulfill the physical requirements of the course or if other options need to be explored. Students are fully responsible for all work missed because of absences, including discussions, article readings, video submissions, and exams. If the material in class is missed, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain missed material and information. Please contact the instructor ASAP.
Incompletes
Incompletes are only given in the event of documented military service, personal illness, or family emergency, which requires the student to no longer attend Pierce College. Injuries prohibiting physical movement must have written notification from a physician stating the injury and reason recommending removal from the course. Students will receive a “W” for the course not an Incomplete in this instance. An incomplete will not be given to a student because of chronic tardiness or missed classes.
The No Penalty Drop Date is now the day before the census (end of 2nd week for 8-week classes). You must drop by that date or you will be assigned a ‘W’ for the class. W’s count against your total attempts District-wide! You can only attempt a class 3 times. That includes withdrawals, incomplete, and substandard grades. Use your attempts wisely!
Exclusions/Withdrawals
A student will be excluded from the course if s/he/they do not participate in the online work the first week by the due dates and will not be readmitted. After the census date, it is the student's responsibility to drop the course and do so by the 'W' date. If the student fails to withdraw from the course and does not complete the work satisfactorily, s/he/they may receive a failing grade. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor and/or drop the course themselves by the census date to avoid a 'W'.

Religious Holidays There are a variety of so-called “religious holidays” occurring during the semester. While these are neither Federal- or State-sanctioned holidays, they ARE days of religious observance that may impact some students in the class. If you plan to miss a class period, an assignment due date, or an exam because you will be practicing your religion on a particular day, you need to notify your instructor of this fact by the end of the second week of the semester. Official notification will take the form of a note, written and signed by the student, which specifies ALL the anticipated date(-s) of absence. A student who provides this information by the deadline will be able to reschedule missed exams or work, and their absence will not adversely affect their attendance record. Failure to provide proper notification by the end of the second week will negate the student’s option to reschedule or receive credit for missed activities. (Face to Face classes)
