Attendance

Students are strongly encouraged to attend all classes. Arriving chronically late or leaving early may be interpreted as an absence. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Late arrivals should notify the instructor at the end or during the break of class. Failure on the part of students to do so will result in an absence from that class period. Students are responsible for dropping classes at the Admissions and Records Office when they decide to stop attending class. Should three or more classes be missed, the instructor can exclude/drop the student from the course.

Students who do not officially drop from classes will receive an “F” grade for the class, which will appear on their permanent records. An absence does not excuse students from in-class assignments, missed quizzes/exams, or homework. It is the student’s responsibility to inquire as to work missed during the absence.

Course Flow, Homework, and Assignments

This class will be a highly interactive and collaborative learning environment. Student participation is a fundamental requirement of the course. Participation points, in the form of completed and corrected quizzes, will be awarded to each student. During the term, the instructor will facilitate a number of in-class assignments. In-class assignments CANNOT be made-up.

The instructor has designed the structure of the course in this manner so that students have ample time read the textbooks prior to each class session. Preparation will go a long way in terms of learning new concepts in order for students to make meaningful contributions to the work and vibrant class discussions. READ YOUR TEXTBOOKS over the weekend and BEFORE CLASS!!

All assignments, participation points, and the final exam, will be completed within the classroom. There is no homework, per se, for this course. However, the instructor reserves the right to adjust the syllabus at her discretion.

Participation Points and the Final Examination

The real estate field is a terminology-rich industry. Particularly for those who plan to take the State exam, preparation in the form of weekly quizzes will expose you to the types of wording and concepts found on the test. It is critically important to practice, practice, practice. Upon completion of each unit lecture, one participation point quiz will be given every week. Each quiz represents the content of the week’s chapter and lecture.

There will be three exams for the term.  All exams must be taken for final grade calculation.  The final examination, worth 200 points, will cover only the units outlined in the Weekly Schedule (see below). The Final Exam cannot be missed and must be taken and is required to receive a passing grade (“C” or higher) in the course.

Writing Standards

While this is not a writing class, it is a college level course, and, as such, you are strongly encouraged to proofread all written assignments. Failure to edit your work prior to submission will result in a lower grade. Papers are also to be well written with a logical flow of thought. Papers are to be typed in 12-pitch font. Use standard spacing so that your responses are simple to read and grade.

Students stand to benefit most when assignments are well written and care is reflected in the work submitted. All work is expected to be written legibly, concisely, and follow the conventions of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You are strongly encouraged to utilize editing software such as Spellcheck ( of course, use any proofreading software you prefer) in order to make the editing process simple and instructive.

Cheating and Plagiarism

Student Behavior involving cheating, copying another's work, and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. Students are responsible for being familiar with the information outlined within the “Standards of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Action” located in the current LAVC Catalog and Schedule of Classes. Students are expected and required to do their own work. No copying of other students’ work is allowed.

Activities that are considered to be CHEATING include, but are not limited to, the following:

Copying from another students exam
Talking with another student during an exam
Using unauthorized notes or electronic devices during an exam
Violation of any of these rules could result in a lowering of the exam grade or the course grade at the discretion of the instructor. This could include a “Fail” grade for homework, quizzes/exams.
