Homework 6
Hint 1: For all of the following problems you must use Table B1 in the Appendix B of the textbook. Hint 2: If you do not have the z score, you must convert scores into z scores. Hint 3: Read carefully as to which problem(s) is/are giving you the z scores, and which problems is/are not giving you the z scores
Problem 1:
The people living in Burbank, California have a mean score of 35 and a standard deviation of 5 on a measure of concern about the climate change. Assuming that the scores are normally distributed, what percentage of people in Burbank have a score a) above 45; b) above 50; c) below 30; d) below 35
Problem 2:
Using information in Problem 1, what is the minimum score a person living in Burbank has to have be in the a) top 2%; b) top 16%; c) top 84%; d) top 95%
Problem 3:
A clinical psychologist has been collecting scores on a particular depression test, which she usually administer to her patients. Assuming that the distribution of scores she obtained follows a normal curve, what percentage of her patients have z scores a) below 1.5; b) above 1.5; c) below -1.5; d) above -1.5
Problem 4:
Using the information on Problem 3, if the mean score of the sample on the depression test is 15, and a standard deviation of 4 (again assuming that distribution of scores follows a normal curve), what percentage of her patients a) score above 16; b) score above 20.
Problem 5:
The test used by the clinical psychologist classifies people as follows:
Patients whose score on the test is: zero to 9 have no depression; 10 to 13 have Mild Depression; 14 to 19 have Moderate Depression; and scores 0f 20 and above have Sever Depression. Using information from Problem 4 (Mean = 15; SD = 4); what percentage of her patients have a) No Depression; b) Mild Depression; c) Moderate Depression; D) Severe Depression
**Must show all of your work (calculations) for full credit. You MUST use the formulas from our textbook/Notes. If you use any other formula for this HW set you will not receive any credit. If work is missing, 50% point deduction will apply to the problem, even if the answer provided is correct.
