Homework 8
Part 1: (12 Points)
For each of the following six experiments decide if the difference between the two groups (experimental and control) is statistically significant using t test for independent means, and p < 0.05 level (two tailed test).
You must show all of your work. Please refer to the chapter slides and the examples. If you do not show your work, you will not receive credit for the problem(s).
N = sample size; M = Mean; S2 = Variance (please note that below the variance is given, and not the standard deviation)
Note: For ALL of the problems below you must show all of your work (Calculations), and you MUST use the steps and formulas that have been included in the textbook and slides. You cannot use any other formula for showing your calcuations. If any other formula is use, even if you arrived at a correct answer, you will not receive any credit. To see an example of how to do these problems, please refer to the Chapter 11 Slides and Notes in the Modules. If you do not include your calculations, the score for that problem will be zero.
Experiment 1
Experimental Group
N = 40 M = 12 S2 = 2.4
Control Group
N = 40 M = 11.1 S2 = 2.8
Experiment 2
Experimental Group
N = 25 M = 12 S2 = 2.4
Control Group
N = 42 M = 11.1 S2 = 2.8
Experiment 3
Experimental Group
N = 40 M = 12 S2 = 2.2
Control Group
N = 40 M = 11.1 S2 = 3.0
Experiment 4
Experimental Group
N = 15 M = 604 S2 = 60
Control Group
N = 15 M = 607 S2 = 50
Experiment 5
Experimental Group
N = 45 M = 604 S2 = 60
Control Group
N = 45 M = 607 S2 = 50
Experiment 6
Experimental Group
N = 15 M = 604 S2 = 20
Control Group
N = 45 M = 607 S2 = 16
Part 2 (8 Points)
For any of the above experiments where there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group a) find the effect size using pooled standard deviation method; b) is the effect size meaningful? Why?
