LOW-STAKES WRITING #5
DISCUSSION - CHARACTERS IN THE READER, HIDDEN FIGURES.
Your second major essay for this class will be about identifying with characters in our reader, Hidden Figures. Before we discuss that later in this module and Week Twelve, it would be good to write a little about what characters impressed you in the book. What exactly did they do that made an impression on you?
Of course the women who worked at West Computing had admirable qualities. These women were smart and dedicated, and they had high ideals and goals for themselves and their families.
From the chapters you've read so far, Chapters 1-13, we've heard about Dorothy Vaughan, Miriam Mann, Mary W. Jackson, Katherine Goble Johnson, and Dorothy Hoover.
Go back to the story and review some of the details of their lives. Did you write in the margins, or highlight an event or passage that was extraordinary? Review their lives before coming to Langley. What kinds of hardships did they endure? How did they meet the challenges before them? How did they handle problems that occurred at Langley? There are many examples.
Pick two (2) characters from the novel and discuss what you felt was admirable about them. What impressed you about their character?
A. Write TWO PARAGRAPHS below in Discussion Space on your findings of each character.
One paragraph on one character, and another paragraph on your second choice of character. No need to quote from text or show page numbers - just use your own words to discuss the situations and events in a general way.
B. When finished, go back and respond to two other students in regards to their choices. Give the other student feedback Do you share some of their viewpoints about the character? Do you have any new insights?
