Pre Reading Strategy KWL - Deadline Friday, March 12, midnight

KWL READING STRATEGY

KWL stands for KNOW, WANT, and LEARN. Before we read, we should always think about what we KNOW about the topic already. Also, before we read, we should think about what we WANT to know about the topic. After we read, we should think about what we LEARNED. Strong readers use this strategy automatically. I'd like you to try it. Here are the steps for this assignment. 

Assignment Instructions: follow carefully

1. Think about what you already KNOW about someone or something in the book Hidden Figures based off of reading chapters 1-4. 
2. Think about what you WANT to know more about from reading chapters 5-9 related to that same person or thing.
3. Click REPLY below and write down your thoughts for steps 1 and 2. [4-6 sentences for each]
4. In your post, please use at least three new vocabulary words from Chapters 1-4 and underline them. 

After you post your reply, you will continue through the module and read chapters 5-9. (Later in the module you will post your LEARN part of this strategy in your post-reading Assignment.)

You will not be able to see other students' posts until AFTER you have posted your answer for this discussion.

In this Discussion, you do not need to respond to two other students' responses. Just post your response only, then move on to the next page for Reading and Listening of 5-9.

Your grade will be based on how well you answer the K and W portions with your own ideas and few grammar errors. (4-6 sentences)

KWL Strategy - Short Sample Only:

K=     I have read until chapter 4, and something that I KNOW is that WWII has begun and the country is doing a lot to try to help the soldiers who go to war. The aircraft industry is increased. President Roosevelt desegregates the war plants to get more workers.  In 1943, Dorothy is recruited as a mathematician at Langley.

W=     I want to know how Langley Lab gets more involved in the war. I also want to know how Dorothy will continue to help the war effort in the coming chapters and whether she will have problems with her goals due to discrimination.
