Assignment Overview
Writing a Compare/Contrast Essay, identifying one character from Hidden Figures and ways in which you identify with that character and ways that are different. Use instructor-approved draft Outline.
Learning Objectives
- Write a clear and cohesive five-paragraph Compare/Contrast essay identifying with a character from Hidden Figures - using Point by Point method (600-800 words).
- Insert one quote from text that is introduced by a Topic Phrase and ends with page number - MLA style with parenthesis.
- Include your corrected Outline above the essay
- Follow the exact format taught in this class about five-paragraph essay format
- Supply ample details from text and your own life as support
Guidelines
From your outline of details submit a Compare/Contrast five-paragraph essay on a character from Hidden Figures.
For full credit, your essay must contain:
- Introduction that begins with a "hook" and ends with a clear, one-sentence Thesis Statement
- Three body paragraphs that begin with clear Topic Sentences
- Point by Point organization that follows Outline (which is submitted above the essay)
- Use of Transitions (Compare/Contrast) in Thesis Statement, Topic Sentences, and in Paragraph details
- Clear Contrast/Compare details supplied from both a character in Reader and student's own experience - lots of good details please (600-800 words)
- One quote from Hidden Figures, introduced by a Topic Phrase, MLA style
- Each paragraph is indented five spaces
- Clear Conclusion that wraps up the overall essay
Include your Final Outline above your essay.
Use your corrected outline to write your essay. Follow a Point by Point organization.
You are required to insert One Quote from Text. Please start the quote, like you practiced, with a Signal Phrase. For example, "According to.." or "Shetterly states...."
Here's a sample: This quote comes after a point you just made. It's there to explain and support what you just stated.
Mary Jackson had confidence about her calculations at work. Her boss questioned her figures yet Mary knew her figures were correct. As Margot Shetterly states, "Mary Jackson respectfully stood by her work" (91). However, I wasn't that way at my job. I felt inferior to my coworkers and manager and was afraid to speak up.
See how the quote fits in? Please try inserting one quote somewhere in your essay.
Please note: The first half of your body paragraph will be on the character from the reader; then your details in contrast (or comparison) will be in the second half of the paragraph (which follows your outline format, point by point).
Transitions - use Compare/contrast transitions where possible, especially in your Topic Sentences. See page 108 of GW5.
Sample topic sentence: Another way I'm different from Mary Jackson is in the workplace. (then start listing examples of her at the workplace, followed by you as opposite on the job).
If you have any questions, let me or Azad know.
ASSIGNMENT is graded for 100 points - see Rubric.
