 Guidelines

Using the Brainstorm and Outline techniques taught in this chapter, your assignment is to brainstorm and create a topic outline on the following subject and then write a short five-paragraph essay from that outline:

TOPIC:  Describe some of the benefits of having a cell phone.

Brainstorm ideas first on your own. Then follow the next two steps.

(1) Turn in a short topic outline on the above topic - show THREE (3) areas where you have benefited from using a cell phone. Supply at least TWO DETAILS each point.

NOTE:  I do not need to see your Brainstorming. Only turn in Outline and Essay.

SAMPLE OUTLINE: (make up your own)

Thesis Statement:  I would be lost without my cell phone.

I.  Personal Benefits

    A.  (supply short phrase detail)

    B. (short detail)

II.  Helps at work

     A. (supply short phrase detail)

     B. (your own detail here)

III. Good for emergencies

      A.  (supply your own idea)

      B. (another detail)

(2) Write a short five-paragraph essay from this outline:

Your short essay will contain:

• Introduction - two-three sentences on the general topic of cell phones.
• Thesis Statement - the last sentence in the Introduction (same as outline Thesis)
• Short Essay with Three body paragraphs of each point with at least two details in support for each paragraph.
• Each paragraph starts with a TOPIC SENTENCE.
• Each paragraph is indented five spaces.
• Short Conclusion (some final thoughts on topic)

For Example, your paragraph divisions may look like this - SAMPLE:

Thesis: I would be lost without my cell phone.

     First of all, I need my cell phone every day for personal use. (Topic Sentence) (insert supporting details in paragraph).

     Second, my cell phone helps me at my job . (Topic Sentence)  (insert supporting personal details)

    Last, I feel safer having a cell phone when emergencies arise. (Topic Sentence)  (insert supporting details)

     In conclusion, (Last Paragraph)  (write your concluding thoughts on this subject)
