Assignment Overview
Quote, Paraphrase, and Works Cited
You have a chance to practice quoting, paraphrasing and works cited again here.
Once again, please submit Three (3) entries below. Space out clearly and leave at least two lines between each entry. Thank you.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate understanding of how to bring in exact text from original source as a quote.
- Demonstrate understanding of how to paraphrase original material correctly.
- Demonstrate understanding of how to source cite a book with two authors.
(1) Quote: [40 points]
Pick a short statement by the author Margot Lee Shetterly (2-3 lines) from our reader Hidden Figures, anywhere in Chapters 10-13 and write the quote below using an Introductory Phrase - just like we've learned in the previous module. Don't forget the page number. If you do not include a page number, you will receive zero for the assignment.
Be sure and proofread before submitting. Watch for EXACT spelling and punctuation and capitalization of every word. Must be exactly the same, or points off.
For example:
Shetterly notes, "After six months, Katherine Goble's temporary assignment to the Flight Research Division was starting to look permanent" (102).
Please note: Punctuation at the end of a quote normally falls inside quotation marks; however, when ( ) parenthesis ends the sentence, the period is moved to the end after the parenthesis - as shown above.
(2) Paraphrase: [40 points]
Again, from chapters 10-13, pick a short statement by the author Margot Lee Shetterly (2-3 lines) and Paraphrase the author in your own words. Don't forget Introductory phrase and page number. If no page number you will receive zero for the assignment.
(a) Type the original quote and page number, and (b) type your paraphrase of that quote.
REMINDER: The quote must be different from the one you used in Part 1 above. Find another quote in ch. 10-13.
For example:
Quote from text: Margot Shetterly stated, "Soon after becoming a mathematician with the Supersonic Pressure Tunnel, Mary Jackson was given an assignment by her boss's boss's boss, a division chief, one of the laboratory's top-ranking managers and most respected researchers" (91).
Paraphrase: Shetterly noted that one of Mary Jackson's first jobs as a mathematician in the wind tunnel division at Langley was an important task assigned to her by a high-level manager who was greatly admired by the engineers and who happened to be the top administrator over her own boss (91).
