ASSIGNMENT: Grammar, Vocabulary, and Sentence Structure Activities -
Unit 4 - pages 86-91
A note on FRAGMENTS (page 87)
Two errors in sentence structure most common in student writing are
(a) Run-on sentences
(b) Fragments
In this Module, we are going to examine what a fragment is and how to correct it.
Professor Jamie Ray has created an excellent video that covers the kinds of fragments found in student writing and the various ways to correct them. If I marked your last essay with a "fragment" notation, you should pay particular attention to this video. If you get my feedback in a future paper on a fragment problem, please come back to this video and listen again on the ways to recognize and correct fragments.
A Fragment occurs when (1) a Subject is missing, or (2) a Verb is missing, or (3) there is an Unattached dependent clause.
After you watch the video, you will notice Activity 9 below contains fragments that need correcting.
Here is Professor Ray's explanation of FRAGMENTS and how to correct them.
