Assignment Overview
ASSIGNMENT - Quote, Paraphrase, and Works Cited
You are being asked to submit Three (3) entries below. Please space out clearly and leave at least two lines between each entry. Thank you.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate understanding of how to bring in exact text from original source as a quote.
- Demonstrate understanding of how to paraphrase original material correctly.
- Demonstrate understanding of how to cite a source correctly in Works Cited page.
1. Quote: [40 points]
Pick a short statement by the author Margot Lee Shetterly (2-4 lines) from our reader Hidden Figures, anywhere in Chapters 5-9.
Write the quote below using an Introductory Phrase - just like we've learned in this module. Don't forget the page number. If there is no page number, you will receive zero for the assignment.
Be sure and proofread before submitting. Watch for EXACT spelling and punctuation and capitalization of every word. Use " " quotation marks. Re-read to be sure you copied quote correctly. Must be exactly the same or points off.
For example:
Margot Lee Shetterly states, "Though Dorothy Vaughan loved her new job in Hampton, and was proud to be helping her country with the war effort, she missed her children terribly" (58).
2. Paraphrase: [40 points]
Pick a different short statement by the author Margot Lee Shetterly (3-6 lines) and Paraphrase the author in your own words. Don't forget Introductory phrase and page number. If no page number you will receive zero for the assignment.
Note: You must submit (a) the original quote and (b) your paraphrase of that quote.
For example:
Quote:
Shetterly says, "In the fall of 1943, Dorothy Vaughan started the school year teaching math at R. R. Moton, the black high school in Farmville, Virginia, just as she had for the past twelve years. She loved being a teacher, and she dedicated herself to helping her students as much as she could while waiting for a response to the job applications she had submitted a few months earlier" (26).
Note: If a quote goes to another page, just put a hyphen in between. For example: . . " (26-27).
Paraphrase:
Shetterly notes that although Dorothy had filled out paperwork for a new job in 1943, she was devoted to teaching math in Farmville, Virginia and treasured working with her black high school students as she had done for many years (26).
Note the paraphrase picked out the important points - applied for a new job in 1943, taught math at a black high school in Virginia, and was a devoted teacher. The wording was changed - "dedicated" turned to (devoted.) "loved being a teacher" was instead (treasured working with), and "twelve years" turned into (as she had done for many years).
Helpful Hint: Thesarus.com - online synonym finder. Type in the exact word and other words (synonyms) will appear that you can use instead of the exact word from the quote.
3. Works Cited: [20 points]
Write a Works Cited entry for Shetterly and the book, Hidden Figures. Remember to follow the rules as shown in previous pages. Check the inside cover for publisher and copyright date. This will be one book by one author. Don't forget, in the title it's also a special edition right? What kind? Watch your punctuation. If your citation runs to the next line, indent the second line five spaces.
