Learning Objectives
- Proper way to create a Vocabulary List for Submission
- Learning new Vocabulary words and their parts of speech
- How to look up definitions and practice writing the word correctly in a sentence
- Getting experience with new words to help build English vocabulary
Guidelines
Now that you've read Chapters 10-13, please review your Vocabulary Journal regarding these chapters of our reader, Hidden Figures. Did you circle any common words in the reader that needed to be looked up?
Your assignment here is to list ten (10) new vocabulary words that you discovered in Chapters 10-13. These words should be common nouns, or verbs, infinitives, adjectives, or adverbs that you would expect to see in college readings and lectures. They can be words you would use in your own future writings in college.
Note on Infinitives. They are actually part of the Verb of the sentence, but only part of the verb. They are not the verb. The verb of the sentence comes before the infinitive. For example:
Maryam loved to read the book. (verb).
Maryam loved to read the book. (infinitive).
COMMON WORDS
The common words you circled would be the words we are talking about that can be submitted. You may have listed them in your Vocabulary Journal already. Remember - common words only.
You do not want to include proper nouns in this assignment. Please leave them out.
What I am looking for are common nouns, verbs, infinitives, adjectives, or adverbs you had to look up to understand their meaning.
Complete this assignment just as you did in Chapters 1-9 Vocab list, except using new words.
ASSIGNMENT
(1) List below ten (10) common words you looked up in Chaps 10-13 of Hidden Figures.
(2) List the word, (page number in book where you found it) and then the definition of the word.
(3) Write the word in your own sentence. Underline the word.
(4) At the end of your sentence put down the part of speech - the way you used the word in your sentence: noun, verb, infinitive, adverb, adjective.
Example of how to submit assignment:
1. overthrow (82) - remove forcibly from power
The military had overthrown the King within two days. (verb)
Notice I used a different verb tense. That's okay. As long as it's the same meaning.
Click on Submit Assignment. Type ten new vocabulary words (from chapters 10-13) as shown above. Number each, 1-10.
