- Learning new Vocabulary words and their parts of speech
- How to look up definitions and practice writing the word correctly in a sentence
- Getting experience with new words to help build English vocabulary
Guidelines
Before you read the Chapters 10-13 this week, check for common words you circled in Chapters 1-9 that you needed to look up. Also, review your personal Vocabulary Journal regarding Chapters 1-9 of our reader, Hidden Figures for common words you didn't know.
Your assignment here is to list ten (10) new vocabulary words that you discovered in Chapters 1-9. These words need to be common nouns, or verbs, infinitives, adjectives, or adverbs. They can be words you would use in your own future writings in college.
Do not include proper nouns in this assignment, like Langley Laboratory, NACA, Tuskegee Airmen, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, etc. These are proper nouns you many not ever see again. Please leave them out.
Remember - submit common words only.
What I am looking for are common nouns, verbs, infinitives, adjectives, or adverbs you had to look up to understand their meaning. For example, in Chapter Six, page 38, last line, the phrase "land of desolation" appears. Do you know what the common noun "desolation" means? If you had to look it up, then that would be a word for this assignment.
Another example: page 39 in the middle the page the word "camouflage" appears. What does that word mean? In the sentence in the book, it was used as an infinitive (to camouflage), but it can also be used as a noun or verb meaning to "hide" something from plain view.
ASSIGNMENT - submit in this order:
Submit a list of ten (10) common words you looked up in Chapters 1-9 of Hidden Figures.
(1) List the word, then the page number in book where you found it, and then the definition of the word.
(2) Below that, write the word in your own sentence. Underline the word.
(3) At the end of your sentence put down the part of speech - the way you used the word in your sentence: noun, verb, infinitive, adverb, or adjective.
Example of how to submit assignment:
1. Camouflage (page 39) - to hide something from plain view.
My father used camouflage to cover the garden utensils in the back yard. (noun).
2. Frugal (page 66) - economical with regard to money or food
In business matters, Jason was frugal with his money. (adjective)
.........continue like this through #10.
Make sure you keep the definition the same as it is used in your sentence. For example:
stood by (91) - support a decision
My aunt stood by her choice to paint the house blue. (verb)
There were five definitions of stand by (present tense of stood by) in an online dictionary. I chose #5 which matched the correct meaning of the word in my sentence. The other four definitions did not match.
stand by
